County cartobibliographies

This section is not specific to Essex maps, but rather applies to many English & Welsh counties.

These are books / web-sites that list out all known printed maps of an individual county, usually with enormous amounts of detail about each one and each modification/edition/variant that has been found - covering atlases and maps of the county designed to be sold individually. I have listed the ones I know about (I have looked at all of these), but please tell me of any more.

Any of these if it is for "your" county is well worth consulting, plus at least some of those for other counties; I have added my subjective opinion of each of them as cartobibliographies, from zero stars (some sort of listing of some maps) to 5 stars (superb cartobibliographies):

Some of the above are quite old, and may well be incomplete and/or wrong in some of their analyses. Anything over (say) 50 years old must be treated with caution, as it is likely more examples of noted maps, and indeed previously entirely unnoted maps will have come to light.

Cartobibliographies of county atlases are on the books page.

On-line cartobibliography

I am only aware of two counties that have county cartobibliographies on-line, plus a large listing. Note that all the links below will open in a new window.

Devon (early) and
Devon (Victorian)
around 120 maps between 1575 and 1837, and then
around 70 maps between 1837 and 1901
