Small British Atlas
The Atlas was published 3 times by Rocque within 1753, this version being the one without plate numbers. The Atlas was republished in 1762 & 1764, and in 1769 as England Displayed.
The Essex plate is taken unchanged from Read's English Traveller of 1746.
Rocque has a high reputation as a surveyor and published of high quality maps & plans, particularly of London - but this is not a quality production; his premises were destroyed by fire in late 1750 and this is probably him buying in plates (from Read who died in 1753) to rebuild his stock.
Displayed scale of 10 miles = 40mm, or 6.4 miles/inch; scale actual = 7.4 miles/inch, or 1:470,000.
