A Map of Essex
County maps appeared in the Weekly Despatch from 1852 to 1862, with Essex in 1860. The maps were then published as The Despatch Atlas in 1863, and from 1863-67 as Cassell's British Atlas (& later dates) and then later by Bacon.
Scale correct at 10 miles = 63mm, or 4.0 miles/inch, ie 1:255,000.
The railway lines are shown to Southend (opened 1856) and Barking to Fenchurch Street (opened 1858), but not Chappel to Halstead (opened 1860).
