A Travelling County Atlas

The maps first appeared in A Topographical Dictionary of Great Britain and Ireland in 1833, then in A New British Atlas in 1833 (reissued to 1836), and then in this Atlas in 1842 with many reissued up to 1888 (as well as in A New County Atlas in 1847).

Displayed scale of 10 miles = 37mm, or 6.9 miles/inch; actual scale = 6.7 miles/inch, or 1:425,000.

The railways shown include the Barking via Tilbury to Southend (opened 1856), and Chapel to Halsted (opened 1860) - although the latter is perhaps only as "proposed" - but not the Halsted to Castle Hedingham (opened 1861).
